communities. They have inspired us in many varied and diverse ways and

Every year it becomes increasingly di 包 cult to select the recipients of the
Chinese Canadian Legend Award among the many deserving people
who work tirelessly to better their communities and Canada as a whole.

The theme of this years event "You and Me, Lets Make Legends TIogether
embodies the idea that by working together and collaborating to achieve

SELECTIUN CUMMITTEE
The annual Chinese Canadian Legend Award has
continuously received special attention from both the
community and the media in Canada as one of the
most credible organisations to recognize outstanding
leaders from the community.
With so many volunteers and leaders in the Chinese community it is a big
challenge for the Selection Committee to select six individuals out of the
many nominees. VVith 24 members making up the Selection Committee，
many of whom are former Chinese Canadian Legend award recipients
and individuals with good knowledge of the community; the 9election
Committee worked through a long process to select the award recipients on
a fair equitable and unbiased basis.
During the process, the Selection Committee considered the various ife
experiences that these nominees have gone through and contributions
they have made to the community the country or the world; while their
political and religious backgrounds are not being considered. After
signing a confdential agreement for not disclosing any information
outside the selection meeting, the members openly and freely discussed
the backgrounds and contributions of each nominee. 了 上 ach nominee
was evaluated by the 9election Committee on a no name basis and these
evaluation reports were then summarized and tabulated by an independent
auditor during the meeting to ensure the entire selection is transparent
and fair. Because of this rigid procedure, we have experienced minimal
disagreements when the award recipients are announced each year
Through this book the stories of these six community leaders are being put
forward; we hope others would be inspired and encouraged to follow their
footsteps to make this a better world for all of us.

For the past 18 years, one of the highlights of the
5 jp year for me is to cejlebrate the fruition of the Chinese
Canadian Legend Award project, each year in a refreshing
way with a uniquely inspiring collage of individuals，.
tall started in 2000 with a group of passionate people saying to each other: “You
and ,Lets make legends together!'” 9uch passion and commitment have kept us
going year after year as we honour individuals who contributed remarkably to the
community in their own way.
Throughout the years, we have also beneftted from the generous support
and genuine advice from the community at various levels, which had
greatly enhanced and enriched the Award. In turn, CCL is building a legacy thats
interwoven with not just the Chinese community but also the Canadian society
crossing cultural historical, and geographical boundaries，
This years theme aptly embodies the spirit of CCL in coming together with joint
efforts, celebrating the triumph of excellence, and sharing these triumphant stories
with the community.
It starts with you and me but it doesnt stop there. Jn the years to comey jet

The mission of the Asian Business Network Association (ABNA) is to
promote harmonious community relations and recognize role models in
the Chinese Community.
ABNAis a non-profit organization established in 1994. Activities
include the Chinese Canadian Legend Award Projectb charity activities
and partnering with other community organiZzations to provide
community setrvices. In 2000, ABNA initiated the Chinese Canadian
Legend Award to recognize and honour Chinese Canadians who have
attained outstanding achievements and signifcant contributions to our
global community and Canada. Recipients receive accolades with the
presentation of an award at the Award Gala and their inspiring stories
are published in the Chinese Canadian Legend book series. [hese book
collections are being kept in the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong
Kong Library at the University of Toronto, as well as the libraries at
University of DOttawa, University of British Columbia, imon Fraser
University University of Victoria, McGil University. In addition，
beginning this yearm, the collections are being kept in the Hong Kong
Wentral Library the libraries of the University of Hong 上 人 ong, Chinese
University of Hong Kong, Hong 上 人 ong Baptist University the 再 ong

Dr Ying Lu graduated from Queens University Miedical
N 9chool in 1994. 9he then completed her five-year
ophthalmology specialty residency in the Department
of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto, with 6 month glaucoma training
under prominent glaucoma specialists Dr. Graham Irope and Dr Yvonne
Buys. Upon fnishing her training, Dr Lu was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada registered as a member of the
Canadian Ophthalmology 9ociety and is a Diplomate of the American Board of
Ophthalmology.
Dr Lu is cutrrently the Head of Ophthalmology for Scarborough Hospital. 9he
teaches at the University of Joronto Medical School as a lecturer. Dr Lu specializes
in laser and cataract Surgeries for glaucoma and cataract patients at her clinic and at
the 9Scarborough hospital. Most recently Dr. Lu performed the First Femtosecond
Laser cataract Surgery in an WOntario 上 Hospital.
For the past 17 years, she has performed more than 30,000 eye sufgeries bringing
precious sight back to countless patients. Dr Lu is afjliated with Mount 9inai
互 ospital, [oronto 9carborough 了 Hospital and Kensington Eye Institute. As well she
is amember of the international medical faculty of the ORBJIS Flying Eye 再 ospital.
In addition to her busy medical practice, Dr Lu contributes her time and
experience to_ help people in need.9he runs a community outreach eye clinic for
Mount 9inai Hospital for the past 10 years. Over the past ten years, she has run
an 0 任 -site eye clinic at Carekirst where she is an Honorary Advisor. In 2004, she
co-founded the ORBIS Canadian-Chinese Advisory Council (CCAC) to facilitate
blindness Prevention in Chinas rural areas ，
Jn 2008, Dr Lu won the Outstanding Professional Achievement Award and the
viewers choice at the Miandarin Profle Award organized by Fairchild Ielevision.
In 2009, Dr Lu was recognized with the Best Community Service Award by the
Association of Chinese Canadian 上 ntrepreneurs.
Dr Lu was one of six recipients of Canadian Chinese Legend Award in 2008. She
serves as a member of the selection committee Since 2009. Since 2010, Dr Lu has
been the co-chair for the Canadian Chinese Legend Alliance .9he is honoured to
be involved and support the Asian Business Network Associations commitment to
better local and global communities.

Stephen Siu has served the community in different
capacities -- as 上 Executive Director of the Chinese Cultural
Centre of Greater [Toronto, Assistant Director of the
是 殉 Rs on 人 Trade O 印 ce and currently as President of the Yee Hong
Community Wellness Foundation.
Stephen started his career as a journalist with the United Press Internationalb and
later became Chief 上 ditor of the American news agencys Hong 下 ong bureau. He
then took up a senior editorial position with the Chinese edition of the Readers
Digest.
After joining the 再 ong 上 ong Covernment in 1980, 9tephen orchestrated publicity
for many major cultural events, including the Festival of Asian Arts and 甩 ong
Kong International Film Festival. He also ran promotions for ong 上 Kongs major
museums and performing groups.
He settled down in Toronto in 1988, working as Christian Childrens Fund of
Canadas Project Consultant, host of Shaw Cable 108s current affairs program and
the 11-city Festival Hong 上 ong 92s Public Relations consujltant.
Stephen was a Board Member of the Chinese Information and Community
9ervices and the Metro Toronto Volunteer Centre; Public Relations Chair of Serve
Canada ; and Jrustee of the Scarborough Grace 再 ospital. VVhen Toronto was hit
by SARS in 2003, he led the secretariat of the Community Coalition Concerned
About 9ARs formed by 62 community and business organizations.
He is currently a director of the TIelus Community Board of Greater Toronto
Area and Little Pear Garden Dance Company and honourary advisor to Several
non-proftt and cultural groups, including the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong
Kong Library Chinese Canadian Photographic 9ociety of Toronto, Ontario Cross-
Cultural Music 9ociety and Ontario Chinese Folk Music Orchestra，
Stephen was given the Rotarys 4-VWay Test Award in 2008 for being arole model
in the community. He won the Chinese Canadian Legend Award in 2009. In 2010，
he received the Arbor Award from the University of Joronto for his outstanding
voluntary service. 时 e was recently awarded the Senate of Canada 150 Medal.

Connie started working with the Chinese Canadian Legend Award
Project in 2007 and evety yeatr since then, she has been pleased to spend
part of her summer working on the English translation of the recipients，
life stories，
JIn addition to working with Asian Business Network Association，
Connie sits on the board of Chinese Family 9etvices of Ontario
(家 和 专业 辅音 中 心 ), a charitable agency funded by United VVay
and three levels of government to provide settlement and counselling
SerVvices in the Chinese community 9he was past President from 2012
to 2017 and cutrrently still very active on the board.
Jn 2007, Connie completed the Director 上 ducation Program at the
Rotman School of Management. As a professional corporate directom
she served on the Board of CAA South Central Ontario for twelve
years, retiring in 2012. Her information technology career spanned
close to thirty years with [oronto Hydro Corporation, where she
was Vice-President and Chief Information O 〇 但 cer overseeing the
amalgamation of six Joronto area utilities and deregulation of Ontarios
electric distribution industry around year 2000.
The recipients of 2018 Chinese Canadian Legend Award stand out
with their dedication and devotion to their work and communities.
One of this years recipients, DT (zabriel Chan, is the geriatrist for
Connies 91-yeafr-old mothen who attends Yee Hongs memory clinic，
one of the many programs founded by Dr Chan，Connie is extremely
grateful to him for the loving care and compassion he shows her
mother and in fact, all of his patients.

Annie was born in 上 unming, Yunnan Province, China.
After graduating with a MA in English Language and
Literature from Yunnan University in 1996,she went
to 人 for the Foreign Affairs O 包 ce of Yunnan Provincial Covernment as a
liaison o 鱼 cer and interpreter. In 2002, she won the British Councils Chevening
scholarship and went to study at the University of London. 9he teceived a MA in
Cultural studies the next year. Later she joined Ford Motor (China) Company in
9hanghai as a government affaits specialist, She immigrated to Canada and settled
in Wttawa in 2009. During the years she lived in Ottawa she worked as a freelancer
communications advisor and translator. In 2013 she accepted a short-term job
offer as a communications advisor at the National Arts Centre (NAC),responsible
for pitching to media and helping to pfomote NAC Orchestras frst tour to
mainland whina.ln July 2015, she was taken on as a Public Diplomacy O 生 cer by
the 了 上 mbassy of Canada in Beijing. Her main responsibility there was to advocate
Canadas economic and trade-related strength in China through the planning and
organizing of related events and managing media relations. 9he returned to Canada
in June 2017 and now lives in TIoronto.
9he has drafted numerous speeches, o 但 cial letters and special reports in both
English and Chinese for a number of senior politicians and business leaders of
China, the U.9.and Canada and has published translation works.

Shirley Chan was born in Hong 上 Kong and graduated
from the department of Chinese Language and
Literature at the Chinese University of Hong 上 ong
and subsequently obtained a Miaster of 上 ducation from there. 9hirley worked
as a secondary School teacher in 也 ong 上 Kong. After moving to Canada, she
joined the news industry she had been dreaming of for a long time. VVhen
working frst as a reporter and later an editor in TIoronto Ming Pao Daily News，
she was inspired through interviewing people from different walks of life and
exploring the stories behind the interviewees. In 2010, 9hirley was invited as
one of the panelists for the forum ”jlhe Rise of 了 上 thnic Media , organized by
the Canadian Journalism of Foundation.
Reading and writing are Shirleys lifelong passions, she frmly believed that
good reading experience can move peoples hearts. 9he works as freelance
writen editobp translator and photographer in recent years, Writing Various
current affairs features, editing website and yearbook for non-proftt foundatiom，
and creating recipes for food companies. Although the working formats
are difterent, her passion to convey the deep feeling behind the words to the

陈 医 生 自 小 已 有 和 帝 医 生 的 志向 ， 因 为 外 祖父 和 田 父 都 是 莫
生 。 但 在 香港 哈 中 学 时 ， 他 不 像 苗 年 人 医学 院 的 尖子 一 般 埋 头
苦 读 ， 中 六 时 他 参加 课外 活动 ， 身 兼 多 个 学 会 的 职位 ， 还 要 伦
时 间 运 动 ， 没 有 什么 时 间 读 书 ， 和 结果 成 绩 一 般 ' 至 中 七 时 才 发
力 退 上 “， 但 他 仍然 看 重 这 段 参 与 诗 外 活动 的 日 子 : “我 经 单

90 年 陈 飞 鹏 医生 与 怀孕 太太 、 两 个 年 幼 兄 子 移民 加 拿 大 ，
他 全 国 四 处 找 工 作 ' 见 了 多 个 蔷 院 继 监 ， 但 始终 找 不 到 实 普 机
: 也 融 不 能 申请 加 拿 大 的 终 生 狼 照 ， 心 否 充满 迷 习 ， 愿 力 很
大 那 时 他 正在 加 西 找 工 作 ， 想不到 这 时 他 接 到 多 偷 多 的 消
息 ， 有 两 个 实 避 岗位 接受 申请 ， 最 余 陈 医生 家 其 中 之 一 的 老人
科 录 取 了 “。 “有 些 时 候 入 怎样 虱 力 也 没 用 ' 但 柚 合 来 了 和 公 是 你

的 心中 开始 记 持 这 些 人 的 需要 。 “人 将 终 学 商业 化 ， 絮 禹 不 同
的 专科 有 不 同 的 赚钱 能 力 。 其 实 艾 生 旬 助 病人 ， 是 什么 专科 于
不 重要 ， 那 只 是 一 条 途 径 ， 我 看 重 的 是 这 班 病 人 ， 那 我 融 不 售
怕 半 ， 怕 他 们 慢 ， 这 种 想法 熏 助 了 我 在 老人 科 的 成 长 。，
改革 制度 曲 助 更 多 人
实习 完成 后 陈 飞 鹏 医生 出 任 熙 康 中 心 考 人 专科 服务 各 监 ，
稍 后 再 担任 北约 克 全 科 医 院 (NYGH ) 老人 科 主 任 ， 由 1997 年
服务 至 2015 年 。 在 当 上 行政 职位 后， 陈锋 生 心 庄 想 ， 怎 柑 能 发
挥 最 大 的 医疗 效果 : “我 一 个 人 看 症 看 上 十 九 年 ， 一 理子 也 只
可 能 得 助 十 万 人 “， 但 如 果 能 好 好 设计 铬 疗 制 度 ， 融 可 以 意 助 一
百 万 ， 甚 至 绑 百 万 鸭 人 。 ,4 於是 他 开始 在 在 医院 绢 推动 各 种 计
划 ,例如 NYGH 的 :预防 骨折 计划 ,， 便 是 由 他 一 手 贫 如， 陈 草
生 在 日 常 诊 症 中 过 到 跌 伤 骨折 的 老人 ， 发 恤 不 少 人 在 重 的 骨
折 发 生前 ， 都 有 较 轻 微 的 骨折 ， 於 是 他 智 合 不 同 的 攻 院 部 月 ，
将 骨折 的 年 老病 人 ， 自动 转 介 去 检查 骨 质 ， 防 止 将 来 发 生 更 灰
重 的 骨折 问题 。 另 外 他 又 在 NYGH 老 人 科 及 熙 康 中 心 老 人 科 推
广 预 防 骨 质 用 中 症 的 “POVVER” 计划 。
此 外 陈 医 生 又 倡导 成 立 " 柏 金 有 症 健康 计划 、 “老人 入
桶 急 医 访 服 务 ， 、 “ 攻 院 日 问 计划 、“ 记 屋 力 诊所 」 、 外 展
队 以 及 上 老人 雍 询 服务 。 另 一 方面 ， 他 又 协助 其 他 机 构 举 办
慢性 病 自我 管理 计划 ， 协助 士 嘉 堡 西 旋 山 攻 院 设立 保 建 中
心 ， 服 务 有 精神 问题 的 华裔 病人 “。 他 更 一 手 结合 NYG 瑞 的 的

陈 飞 月 医生 坦言 要 成 立 这 些 计 划 冰 不 容易 ， 特 别 是 经 费
方面 ， 他 试 过 零下 23 度 拍 门 找 经 费 遭 到 拒 缀 。 很 多 计划 开始
时 ' 找 经 费 都 会 失败 ， 但 有 和 这 一 份 的 热情 ， 只 要 党 试 去 做 “有
时 等 一 年 ， 有 时 等 两 年 ， 和 经 费 最 终 就 会 来 。) 陈锋 生 有 很 多
次 这 样 的 经 历 ， 像 拍 门 失败 的 组 织 第 二 年 便 为 他 们 提供 了 和 经
。 上 国 队 合作 闻 不 容易 ， 当 中 要 有 忍耐、 磨合 。 磨 的 过 程 很 辛

偷 多 爆发 时 ，NYG 了 是 重 必 区 ， 有 不 少 医 访 人 员 受 到 感染 ' 诬
医生 也 被 召回 医院 进入 面临 疫 症 爆 发 的 病房 硬 忙 ， 回 想 当 日 他
承认 也 有 很 大 的 择 扎 ， 他 在 家 囊 土 库 五 小 时 ， 看 圣经 祈 禧 ， 最
终 角 然 上 障 ， 因 加 这 是 医生 的 职责 ， 没有 消防 员 在 大 火 前 放
下 救火 喉 序 并 ， 猎 生 也 是 一 榜 。, 陈 医 生 稍 后 在 SARS 血 清 学
检测 证 实 为 阳性 ，2004 年 他 儿 颁 最 高 专业 奖 。

Ever since he was a child, Gabriel wanted to be a doctor. Perhaps
this was because his grandfather and uncle were both doctors
trained in western medicine. Howeven when he was in high school
in Hong Kong, Gabriel did not put the effort he later showed while
attending medical school. In grade twelve, he spent most of his time
on extracurricular activities, and was a member of several student
organizations in addition to playing a lot of sports， He simply had
no time to study and as a result his grades were only so-so. Only by
thirteenth grade did he begin to take his studies seriously Howevem
he still regards this period of intense extracurricular activity as
important in his personal development: “TI often organized activities，

promoted events, made public speeches and took the role of team
leader TI cultivated social and collaborative skills without knowing
it, [hese team skills have been quite useful in health care and work
within a hospital environment.”
Gabriel graduated from Faculty of MIedicine of the University of
Hong 上 ong in 1982. After graduating, he took a different path
from many classmates who wanted to work in large hospitals or
Specialize in popular feldqs like cardiology. Because of his personal
beliefs, Cabriel worked for United Christian Hospital, even though
he would earn a lower income. TIhis experience taught him a great
deal in medical practice. Gabriel said，JThis was the turning point
in my life. JIhe majority of doctors in the Department of Medicine
were Christians. 上 veryone came to the job with a mission, which
confrmed what practising medicine meant to me 下 e lived very
modestly with his wife, Roselia, in a two hundred square foot
room in the hospital. IJhere Gabriel found life-long friends and
teachers who infuenced him profoundly including some doctors
who later became widely known and well respected in Hong 上 ong.
“VVhenever there was a problem, a group of doctors would discuss
how to help the patient. IJhe effort was always team-oriented.
learned how to be a doctor and care for patients this way Crabriel
rose to be a senior Medical OO 但 cer after five years and at the same
time held a teaching position.
In 1990, Gabriel his pregnant wife, and their two young boys，
immigrated to Canada. Gabriel looked for work all over the country.
He met many hospital directors, but did not receive any residency
offers. Unable to work as a doctor in Canada, he felt despair At
that time, Cabriel was looking for a job in VVestern Canada. He
was under great Stress， Unexpectedly two residency positions in

Toronto opened up for applications, and Cabriel was accepted as
a resident in geriatrics.，9ometimes people try their best and fail.
Then an opportunity artises when it s totally unexpected.Jhe five-
year residency was very hard and he often had to work through the
night. Gabriel recalled that this was a low point in his life, but it
gave him the opportunity to recognize the importance of the fteld of
geriatrics, and shape his character.
In the early 1990s geriatrics was a new specialty TIhe feld was not
popular and paid little compared with other Specialties. Doctors
could only manage to see a few patients a day. Gabriel was used
to a fast pace and initially had di 全 culty adapting to the unhurried
ways of caring for his older patients. But as he gradually saw
the sufferings of the elderly Gabriel was moved. Once in the
emergency room, he saw an old man who could not speak 上 nglish，
helpless and desolate. Gabriel witnessed the plight of this patient
and remembered the needs of these vulnerable people，Many people
commercialize medicine and judge different specialties on their
abilities to make money In fact, which specialty is not important，
it is only a means to help patients. 开本 value a patient, then 工 wi
not be bored at work, nor be upset that they are slow.Jhis kind of
thinking has helped me grow in geriatrics.…
After his residency Cabriel served as the Director of Geriatric
Services at Yee 有 ong Centre for Geriatric Care and later served as
the Head of Geriatric Division at the North York Ceneral Hospital
(ONYGIU from 1997 to 2015. After assuming the administrative
role, Cabriel refected on how he could exert the greatest infuence:

9o he began to promote and devise various programs in the hospital，
such as NYGHs Fracture Prevention Program. During daily
consultations, (zabriel realized that many elderly suffered from
minor fractures before a severe fracture occurred. So he facilitated
difterent hospital departments to work together to automatically
refer elderly patients suftering minor fractures for followup to
Prevent more Serious future fractures and 但 ls.
In addition, Gabriel promoted the“"POVVER"program:
Promoting Osteoporosis VVellness through 了 ducation, Research
and Resources among NYGH, Yee Hong Centre for Geriatrics
Te 了 pCTeSsEGCentietlonweriataaeareandiubliecliecalths
Gabriel also advocated for the establishment of programs such as
Parkinson VVellness Program, Acute Care Unit for 上 lderly Day
再 ospital Program, Memory Clinic, Outreach TIeam and Geriatric
Consujtation 9ervices. On top of all that, he has assisted in
developing a program called Chronic Disease 9elf-management ，
and helped Mount Sinai 于 ospital to set up a VVellness Centre to
serve Chinese patients with mental disorders. He also integrated
NYGHs Geriatric Medicine with Geriatric Psychiatry Services and
assisted the hospital in creating the Central Intake TIriage program.
Because of all these contributions, from 2007 to 2009, Gabriel was
appointed Co-chair of Specialized Geriatric 9ervices for Local
了 ealth Integration Network (LLHIN) of the Ontario Covernment，
ln 2015,he helped raise funds and produced video clips on Geriatric
Disorders to help educate patients and the community.
Gabriel admits that it is not easy to develop these comprehensive
care programs, especially when it comes to funding. A lot of plans
will fail to get funding in the beginning. But with enthusiasm, even
让 you have to wait a yeat even two years, eventually the funding

will come.”Gabriel has had many such experiences. He remembers
going out one day in minus 23 degrees Celsius Weather to solicit
funding for a program and was turned down. But the following
yeam he received funding support for that program. “Teamwork
is not easy One must be patient and willing to compromise. he
process of compromise is very hard, but without teamwork, you cant
achieve bigger things and cant help more people. Gabriel thinks 让
he can win over the support of different groups, he will be able to
help more people effectively.
Gabriel believes that serving people in need is a doctors greatest
mission and honoub and this view sometimes even ovetrrides his
own safety When 9ARS broke out in Ioronto in 2003, NYGHL was
hit hard. Many medical sta 任 were infected. Gabriel was called to
the hospital to help in the SARS outbreak. JIhinking back, Gabriel
admits that he struggled hard. 也 e spent fve hours in his basement
praying and reading the Bible before fnally deciding to go to the
hospital to help.“Firefghters dont put down the hose and leave
when theres abig fre, and doctors are the same，said Gabriel.
Later his serology was tested positive for SARS. In 2005, he was
recognized with the Dr Morris iu-Cheong Memorial Award for
his exemplary patient care and humanitarian work, the highest
award at North York General 且 ospital.
ln addition to practicing medicine and administration, Gabriel also
teaches and provides guidance to many medical students, nurses，
residents and health professionals. He is an assistant professor at
the University of Joronto Department of Medicine. Students report
that (zabriel can explain complex concepts in a simple and concrete
manner At NYGH he was selected three times as the“Teacher of

the Year for his clear and thoughtful lectures.“Ihe most important
thing in teaching is to be simple and transparent, Dont use complex
medical terminology Make sure that students understand，
lfthe elderly are an at risk community then elderly immigrants
are even more at risk. In the feld of geriatrics, Gabriel recognized
that in addition to language barriers, Chinese immijgrants also
have many di 全 culties caused by cultural diferences. For example，
questionnaires assessing the cognitive abilities of the elderly can
be confusing. Also, many immigrants have emotional problems
because they do not adapt easily to their new environment.， [hey
fear that they wil become a burden on their children. Gabriel
highly appreciates their love for their children and hopes that the
children of these elderly people will be understanding of their
Parents.
Love and relief of suffering for his patients are the biggest
motivation for Dr Gabriel Chans work.”Jhese patients taught
me to have compassion, so that TI have the passion to help them.
These are real motivating forces. Jhere are many difculties in
implementing care programs. Funding is inadequate, teams have
trouble working togethemn and people sometimes get discouraged.
But if you see your goal, you can persevere and ultimately help
others live better lives，Grabriel remembers a grandmother who lost
all her teeth. IJhe image of her bright smile is etched in his mind and
encourages him to move forward. In the future, Dr Gabriel Chan
hopes to use different activities to promote a Happy Community ，
allowing seniors with needs to get the care they need from volunteer
organiZations and to overcome big hurdles in their lives.

Angela was born into a family of doctors in Hong 上 ong. From an
early age she was exposed to medical knowledge. Even as a child，
she often helped her fathemn a pediatrician. She would answer the
phone and give guidance to worried parents with sick children.
Atfter graduating from high school, Angela went to the United
9tates for further study After receiving a doctorate in medicine
(MD) from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she
moved to Canada to reunite with her family which had immigrated
in the meantime. Here she received residency training at the
University of [oronto.

In her third year of training, Angela chose Ceneral Internal
Medicine as her subspecialty. At that time, there were only two
other residents in Toronto who chose General Internal Medicine.
VVhy had she not chosen to follow in her fathers footsteps and
study pediatrics? Angela explained，T liked the breadth and depth
of General Internal Medicine. did consider choosing pediatrics.
But 计 工 were a pediatrician,T would normally communicate with the
Parents of the sick children. 工 prefer communicating directly with
the patients because ] can learn more from them.”
For Angela, Ceneral Internal Medicine meant more complicated，
unpredictable, and even unprecedented situations. Jhis kind of
challenge was what attracted her to it. VVhether in Hong Kong or
the United States, Angela was not afraid of di 全 cult problems. At
the Johns Hopkins University 9chool of Medicine, only two of the
one hundred and twenty students in the class were from outside
the United States, and Angela was one of the two. 9he was also her
class representative for the American Miedical 9tudent Association.
After residency training, Angela had to plan her future carefully
Clinical practice, medical research, and teaching were al]l career
paths she wanted to pursue. In the end, she decided to further
her studies to lay a solid foundation for whatever road she might
take. In 1996, Angela returned to the University of [Toronto after
receiving a PhD in Health Research and 于 ealth Policy from
Harvard University (PhD) and began practising academic medicine.
Atthe start, Angela was under a lot of pressure: she had to make

residents, and be on standby for emergency patients half of the
time. On top of that, she was a new mothen and her own children
and family needed care. She never seemed to have enough time.
VVhen thinking back to this period of her life, Angela said she was
not a superhero with extraordinary powers. 9he credits her familys
support, especially her mothemr who often took the initiative to help.
At the same time, Angela listened to other Peoples suggestions and
spent almost all her salary to hire domestic helpers. 上 ven though
it was not economical, Angela thought the idea was good since she
did not enjoy housework. It was better for her to use her expertise
and time to do something that she enjoyed, and as a result was able
to spend quality time with her kids. [t was also an investment in her
future.
This "investment paid o 任 . Over the last twenty years, Angela
has published more than two hundred papers and has received
numerous awards and honors in the felds of research, education
and health care in Ontario and Canada, including the Ontario
Premiers Research 上 Excellence Award, the Canadian Institutes of
了 ealth Research senior scientist awards, the University Health
Network Department of Medicine Award for Excellence in Clinical
teaching and the University of Joronto Eudenie Stuart Award for
best mentorship, to name just a few. Angela established the world-
renowned University of Toronto Center for Excellence in Skeletal
Health Assessment (CESHA). At University Health Network，
she founded the Osteoporosis Program and served as Founding
Director 9he is also an adviser for National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA), assessing the skeletal health of their

astronauts under weightlessness. Angela holds a Tier 1 Canadian
Research Chair in Musculoskeletal and Postmenopausal Health.
Because of her excellence in the medical feld, Angela has been
invited to participate in the development of Canadian and
international health and clinical practice standards, where she was
often the only Asian expert on these committees. She has always
advocated for the consideration of factors Such as ethnicity race，
gender and age in Patient care, since there is scientific evidence that
the risks of various diseases are different for ethnic groups than
Caucasians. She feels that her lone ethnic voice on a committee that
is almost entirely Caucasian is not enough. 9he 1 hopes and
encourages more Whinese colleagues not just to bury themselves
in clinical care of academic research, but to also join the ranks
of other standard-setting committees. Angela is very supportive
of community events and participates in the activities of various
medical charitable organizations. She often volunteers to give
public lectures on health care within the Chinese community.
Angela carries herself with grace: in the best Chinese tradition, she
is modest and humble, dedicated and devoted to her work, sincere
and caring to others. JTJhe famous Chinese doctor of the Iang
Dynasty Sun Simiao, once said in the “Virtues of Great Physicians :
“There are fools who study medicine for three years and think there
is no incurable disease in the world. But after practising medicine
for three years, they know there are no standard prescriptions for al
the diseases in the world. Doctors must, therefore, study deeply and
widely depend not on what others say but their own understanding

through diligence and hard work." Angela developed her humility
and respect not only because of her love of medicine, but also from
已 9 early exXperlence as a new doctor.
At the time, she was caring for a patient in the intensive care unit
(CU). Saying goodbye one night, she said “See you tomorrow.，Jhe
patient mnuttered，I wont see you tomorrow." Angela was shocked.
She carefully re-examined the patients charts and information. [he
data on all of the monitoring equipment showed that the patients
condition was stable and there was no indication of danger 9he
left work and went home. 了 owever when she returned to the
hospital at six the next morning, she found medical sta 仔 performing
emergency resuscitation on the patient. Angela joined in the eftort，
but the team was unable to save the patient.
This incident touched Angela deeply 9he thought that the Patient
had known death was imminent, despite the fact that all kinds of
advanced instruments and testing methods could not detect the
abnormality. 了 上 ven 让 Angela had the best education in the worlds
top universities, even 让 the technology was most advanced, there
are mysteries in diseases that are infnite and unfathomable. 9ince
then, Angela has always treated each patient with a respectful, awed
attitude, as 让 they were teachers who could recognize different
manifestations of various ilnesses. Angela said: “Even with the
same 训 ness, each patient s experience may be very different, and the
symptoms and treatment effects are not the same. Only by listening
and observing carefully can the doctor truly understand.
Angela also pays attention to the teaching of medicine and

humanistic care - the Art of Medicine - to students and residents.
9he said that in this information age, various technological means
are effective and convenient, but students who rely too much on
technology may neglect one-on-one direct communication between
doctors and patients. JIn such cases, technology becomes a barrier
between doctors and patients. Doctors should be careful not to be
trapped by the 1imitations of technology Regardless of how useful

ln 2006, [rwin co-founded Mennie Global Group and Mennie
Lanada Ltd.,which specialize in the manufacture of fberglass
doors. WVith natural entrepreneurial ability inherited from his
parents, and valuable business management experience acquired at
Lexus, ITrwin has had a smooth path to success. In just a few years，
Mennie Canada has the highest matket share in Canadian fberglass
door industry and Mennie Clobal Group has become one of the
largest supplier of fberglass doors. Jts products are being sold all
over the world, with a large market share in Britain, France, and
Australia. DURA Canada, a commercial real estate and investment
offshoot of Mennie Canada, has also grown rapidly and now owns
more than half a million square feet of property in the Greater
Toronto Area.

Mennie Canada acquired a manufacturing company in China. ITrwin
knew that the fberglass door market was dominated by American
and European companies. [he only way to break in was to have
unique products of high quajlity Consequently he led his company
on ayear-long task to investigate the market and re-adjust product
development strategies accordingly IJhe goal was to understand
customers needs, rehabilitate the reputation of Made in China-
products which were regarded as low in Price and inferior quality.
He wanted to enter the market with high-quality products that were
meticulously researched and developed with unique characteristics，
all Prerequisites for successS.
Already Mennie has achieved outstanding results. [rwin himse1f
has also attracted industry attention. In 2012, he won the Best
Entrepreneurial Award from the Association of Chinese Canadian
Entrepreneurs (ACCE),a non-proftt organization founded in 1994.
Its predecessor was the Chinese-Canadian Entrepreneurship Club.
The purpose of ACCE is to promote training, seminars, exchanges，
and give out awards for outstanding entrepreneurs， Jts mission
is to support Chinese-Canadian entrepreneurs in launching new
businesses and strengthening the competitiveness of Chinese-
Canadian companies in the global market.
After receiving the award, Irwin joined the winners circle of ACCE，
where he met other entrepreneurs and gained access to resSoOUrces
that were helpful in starting and running a business，. He was deeply

touched and felt that many Chinese Canadian entrepreneurs
focused on working hard, but lacked knowledge or access to
resources provided by the federal and provincial governments to
help companies grow faster and better 9ince then, [rwin has been
determined to give back to the community share his entrepreneurial
experience with his peers, and help them take advantage of al
available resources，
JIn 2015, TIrwin was elected as President of ACCE 上 .During his
tenure as president, he vigorously developed membership enrolment
and sponsors, pfoactively partnered with other groups including the
Chambers of Commetrce and other government agencies, and held
seminars and exchanges to beneft more Chinese entrepreneufs.

Gowling VVLG to the Association. Altogether he oversaw more
than one hundred and ffty events. Membership has grown by over
twenty fve percent. [he Associations annual Chinese Canadian
Entrepreneur Awards Crala has always been one of the highjights
of ACCE. Ihe number of participants is usually seven or eight
hundred. Under [rwins leadership, the number of attendees at the
2017 awards ceremony reached more than twelve hundred.
In recent years, more and more immigrants from Mainland
China have arrived. Many People wish to start a business in their
new country 甩 oweveb they have di 鱼 culty in understanding
their surroundings and many of these newcomers have language
barriers. Because of this, Irwin advised the ACCE to set up

Mainland Initiative, a Chinese-language program which teaches
entrepreneurial skills and knowledge to these new immigrants.
Under [rwins leadership, ALCCE has already helped hundreds of
Chinese entrepreneutrs to Start or grow businesses. 9ome of these
companies have even become leaders in their industry.
As an immigrant from Mainland China, Irwin is contributing to the
friendly and mutually benefcial relationship between Canada and
China. He has assisted in organizing Chinese trade delegations to
visit Canada, and acted as middleman for Potential trading partners.
于 e has also helped Canadian companies break into the Chinese
market. ]rwin also believes that Chinese entrepreneurs cannot be
confned to the Chinese community in Canada.， They must establish
closer ties with mainstream society Under his efforts, ALCCE 下 has
signed a cooperation agreement with the Canadian Aboriginal and
Miinority Suppliers Council (CAMSC), which will help Chinese
entrepreneurs obtain supplier contracts with many of the worlds
Fortune 500 companies. ACCE has also established a new award
that is open to all Canadians: Canadian entrepreneurs who make
outstanding contributions to Canada-China trade, regardless of
their ethnicity will be commended and recognized with the award.
At ACCE gatherings, Jrwin worked with over a hundred volunteers，
including many entrepreneurs. Although many of them were very
busy managing their own companies, they insisted on volunteering
at the Association and dedicated their efforts to giving back to
the community. Irwin is very impressed by such efforts, and at

the same time, he was touched by the volunteerism he saw in a
totally different setting. His second oldest son had been admitted
for surgery and hospitalization to TIoronto Sick 上 Kids Hospital，
where many volunteers helped out daily. Irwins son had undergone
surgery previously in Shanghai. VVhen the operation failed, they
returned to Toronto to have his son undergo surgery here. [rwin
saw the contrast in the hospitals of the two countries,， Aside from
the differences in medical systems, the most profound difference
for Irwin were the volunteers in Canadian hospitals. He said: In
Canada, there are many people who spend their time volunteering，
and this makes the whole society and everyones life bettet. 工 want
to use my own actions to tell entrepreneurs from Miainland China
that Canada ofters many benefits, but giving is very important here.

In 2016, Irwin was 也 onorary Chair for a successful evening gala
raising funds for TIoronto SickKids Foundation. Irwin personally
presided over various fundraising activities and took the lead in
donations. Over one million dollars was raised for the purchase of
hospital equipment including a neonatal MRI unit for premature
infants. Fle also served as co-chair for Panda Gala,hosted when a
Chinese giant panda visited Canada. JIhe Cala raised more than
$300,000 in donations for impoverished areas in 9ichuan, China，
to be used to buy school supplies for local students. In 2017, he
co-chaired Mayor of Vaughans Lunar Gala, and raised $35,000 for

In addition, Irwin has donated to countless charities, such as
Terry Fox Foundation, Covenant House, Princess Margret Cancer
Foundation, Chi Heng Foundation and Yee Hong Community
VVellness Foundation, among others. In 〇 October 2017, for his
community contribution and active volunteerism, [rwin was
recognized with a Senate 150th Anniversary Medal, which
commemorates the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canada.
Jrwin bejlieves that giving back to the community is not only abonut
donating money but more importantly contributing time. As a

trips total nearly 120,000 miles, which exceed the standard distances

后 步 步 营 升 ， 三 十 年 后 已 是 最 顶级 的 攻 人 和 经理 ， 但 在 待遇 和 和 阐

话 中 心 ， 她 觉得 很 有 意 筑 。 而 向 盏 营 中 文学 校 捐 出 十 万 加 元 ，
她 的 意 原 是 店 每 一 航 刚 的 小 孩 ， 访 得 好 的 都 能 领 到 奖学金 ， 不

Before the age of 79, 9usans role was wife, mothen and
grandmother 9he never imagined that her husbands death would
turn her life upside down. In the face of the 9eptember 11 tragedy
she emerged from her cocoon to connect with the world around her.
Nineteen years later she is Praised by the community as a Proactive
philanthropist， TIoday she is a savvy investor and donob directs
trading on an investment hotline, and knows the personnel and
operations of each charity she is involved with. Hard work is the
reason for her success.“] dont want to go backwards. I dont want
to sleepwalk through life again，she said.
VVhenever 9usan talks about her life, she always adds，TIhank God
for His guidance and a lifetime of comfort . As a Catholic, she is

grateful for (zods gifts. 9he was born in Hong 上 Kong in 1924 to a
well-of family. 也 er father had a wholesale pork business in Sheung
VVan Market. Even when the Japanese occupied the territory during
VVorld War JIL, she didnt go hungry She was a student at the
9outhwest junior middle school and after graduating from grade 9，
continued on at a school that later became 9acred Heart Canossian
9chool. YVhen the school was closed down nine months later
because of the occupation, 9usan studied Japanese and later worked
in the Bank of Yokohama in Hong Kong、.
By comparison, Susans husband, Mr Leon Wong, had a difcult
childhood. Leon was born in Jamaica in 1919. VVhen he was three
years old, following Chinese custom at that time, his father sent
him away to their ancestral hometown in China to be raised by his
grandparents. Later he was dispatched to Hong 上 ong, where he was
admitted to VVah Yan College. 上 very day he rode a train from Tai
Po to Hong Kong Jsland to attend school，He missed his parents，
his ffteen brothers and sisters in Jamaica. He wrote many letters
home hoping to return to Jamaica，said 9usan. Leon had a lonely
childhood, unlike Susan, who grew up in a loving family.
After Leon graduated from high school in 1937, he was accepted
to university but could not afford the tuition. Later he got a job as
a junior secretary to the prominent Ho LIung family in Hong 上 Kong，
and it was Ho Jungs wife who recommended him for a job with the
Hong 人 Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation in 1941.
VVhen the Japanese occupied Hong 下 ong, the British bank
temporarily closed its operations. Leon was transferred to the same
Japanese bank where Susan was working, and they got married
eight years later. Susan recalls, At that time, there were six people
courting me. TIhe reason why I chose him was not for his wealth，
nor his looks. [It was because of his good character and even

temperament.”9usan is happy that she found her true love and very
proud of their long and happy marriage.
VVhen Leon got married, he was working as ateller at 百 SB(CL，
earning a monthly salary of four hundred Hong 上 ong dollars.
Over the next thirty years he was promoted step by step until he
became the top Chinese manager. But he was not treated equally
in compensation as other British managers. In 1972 he decided to
retire.“] was delighted, because his retirement meant that we could
travel the world， Even though her husband retired in the Prime of
life, 9usan said that she was not worried. Being with her beloved
husband was more important than anything: 上 xcept when he was
working, we did everything together swimming, walking, and [ai
Chi， Altogether the couple travelled around the world four times.
In October of 1972, when they returned to Hong 上 Kong after a
long trip, Leon bought a brokerage license for stock trading， He
liked to analyze the stock market，said Susan, who still remembers
her husbands investment skills. In fact, Leon earned more money
buying and selling stocks than he did from his bank salary. At that
time, they had a domestic helper who was in a di 全 cult fnancial
situation. Leon used her money three thousand 下 ong 上 ong dollars，
to invest in stocks on her behalf. 卫 e then bought real estate in
Miacau with the profts. VVith dividends, the sum grew to a milion
dollars over the course of eleven years.
In her 590-year marriage, 9usan never had to worry about money:
was carefree, [ didnt have to wotry about anything， Jlhe mostTdid
was give money to our housekeepers for groceries, and to buy things
on credit at the department store， 且 owever her husbands fnancial
aptitude deeply infHuenced her 9he said: People must manage their
fnances， (WOtherwise, wealth will not come their way， But money 让
not spent is meaningless: Money is earned to be spent. 于 you dont

spend it its not yours. VVhen you need to spend, spend. VVhen you
need to save, Save. "9usan Said she and her husband shared the same
concept of money.
Leon also understood the importance of philanthropy and how to
use money most effectively Leon worked in only two occupations
his entire life. After working more than half a century in 1993, he
retired on the advice of his wife.Ihe couple then moved to Toronto
as retirees, where they donated to many charities in the Chinese
community such as Mon 9heong Foundation and Yee Hong
Centre for Geriatric Ware. Later they established a postgraduate
scholarship in 了 conomics at the University of Toronto to fund
outstanding students. “At the time [my husband] was unable to go
to college because of poverty 9%o today ] hope to help others，said
Susan.
Susan always believed that her husband was healthier than herself.
But in 1999, after they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary，
eighty-year-old Leon was admitted to the hospital for what was
supposed to be a routine gallstone operation. VVhen complications
arose during sufrgery he was sent to the intensive care unit. He died
four days latemn after Susan promised him: Dont worrm 工 wil take

In the face of this tragedy 9usan blamed herself and was
overwhelmed by loss. Even after nineteen years, she is still
emotional about it.“IfIThadnt insisted we move to Canada, he
would have been treated in a 再 ong 上 ong hospital，she said. For
two years after her husband's death, she lived with terrible griet，
unable to see anyone.VVhen people called on the phone, the first
sound of their voices would send Susan into tears. 9he would
often go to the cemetery to visit her husband. After receiving grief
counselling for a year she was calmen but her eyes had deteriorated

because she had cried so much.
In the early morning of 9eptember 11,2001, when 9usan saw the
horriftic scene unfolding in New York, she was both saddened and
shocked. At that moment, she made a promise to her late husband:
“Tve been awakened. From now on,wil stand up and be a useful
person. For decades T lived life in ablur Now lwil do things to
help others.” Susan had made a commitment to take care of her
late husbands property But in fact, she was not sure 让 she had the
ability to.“How could TI understand his business” she said. 9he
could not read 上 English, nor could she understand the monthly
statements and trading contracts of the four investment companies
and six banks involved in his fnances. 开 owever she resolved to
learn. In her study room, she looked over her husbands stack of
fnancial documents. Because her eyesight was poobp she used a
large magnifying glass to read. 9he also had the bank translate
the documents into Chinese. And slowly she recognized 上 English
words， Miany people patiently taught me. 攻 工 didnt understand,

asked VVhy?>.， JIhey came to call me curious grandmother ,95uUsan
said. Having learnt so much, 9usan can now even discuss with her
granddaughter whether Facebook stocks are worth buying. All
her effort, she says, is due to her commitment that she made to her
husband and to herself that she would take responsibility for her
OwWD living expenses.
After all this, 9usan has not forgotten there are people in need.
JIn the past, she intended on onjly setting up a scholarship in the
University of Torontos Department of 芋 conomics. But because
of her husbands death, she went on to establish a scholarship in
Public Health in University of Iorontos Department of Medicine
as well. ]he value of the scholarship is more than ten thousand
dollars every year. In addition, she has donated to many charities in

the community including United Way Yee Hong Foundation, Mon
9heong Foundation, Carefirst, as well as religious groups. Over
the years 9Usan has donated a signifcant amount, but she does not
want to disclose specific fgures, because she does not want any
publicity Since 2008, 9usan has actively supported senior activities
at Carefirst, such as donating to the Carefirsts One Stop MIulti-
ServVvices Wentre. From 2009 onward, she has sponsored Carefirsts
annual Charity (zala and its recently developed Mobile Medical
Unit.
9ome say that rich people arent uncommon, but charitable rich are
few. Friends in the community describe 9usan as Very generous，
She says，VVe are all born with nothing and leave the world with
nothing.JjJts not a di 皇 cult decision for her to be charitable.
Before donating monew 9usan must frst understand the operation
of the organization, how they plan to use the money and how
signifcant the result will be. One of her most memorable donations
was the 6,000-square-foot Senior Day Care Centre at Yee Hong
Centre for Geriatric Care. She also donated a hundred thousand
dollars to Mon Sheongs Chinese School. She hopes that her money
will help children from every grade excel enough in their studies to
receive scholarships, as well as keep interest in Chinese culture alive.
9usan once regretted coming to Canada, but now the knot in her
heart has been untied. She believes that it was all Gods plan: 于

Yuen Pau VVoos father was a second-generation Chinese born in
Mialaysia, who retained a spiritual connection to his ancestral village
in Shunde, Guangdong, China，Jhe family later moved to Singapore，
where Yuen Pau grew up A hard worker and a Confucian throughonut
his life, Yuen Paus father infuenced his son deeply with his values and
beliefs. His mothers family had moved from China to Malaysia for
Several generations and she embodied traditional Chinese culture with
Malay and VVestern infuences. Yuen Pau said he inherited from his
mother a sense of curiosity and an openness for wonder .
Yuen Pau grew up in this mujticultural environment and received

Primary and secondary education at Anglo-Chinese School in
9ingapore. At the age of sixteen, he received a scholarship to study
at Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Paciftc in British
Columbia, and then continued his graduate studies in the United
Kingdom, attending the University of Cambridge and the University of
London. His traditional upbringing and world class education further
footed Yuen Pau in the essence of Chinese and WVestern cultutres.
As aresult of these infuences, 9enator VVoo has always maintained a
deep attachment and pride in Chinese culture. In 2012, he co-founded
“China Global: IJhe Vancouver Society for Promotion of Chinese Art
and Wulture and started his tenure as president in 2014. Based in
Vancouveb as Canadas gateway to the Pacifc and Asia, China Global
has promoted international understanding by organizing art exhibitions
to promote Chinese culture. After China Global was founded, it helped
Vancouver Art Gallery hold an exhibition of rare and precious artifacts
- The Forbidden City: Inside the Courts of Chinese 了 上 mperors. Ihe
exhibition lasted three months and as many as 150,000 people attended.
On October 30, 2016, 93-year-old Yuen Pau Woo was appointed as
an independent senator by the Prime Minister of Canada. Ihat day
was also the second anniversary of his fathers death. He wrote on his
Facebook page: (My father) was an old-fashioned Confucian who
believed in a Chinese version of the Canadian ideal: peace, ordep
and good government.VVhich is why he would have appreciated my

appointment to the Canadian Senate, and would have considered it the
highest calling for a citizen，
Before becoming a senatobn Yuen Pau had a highly regarded reputation
in both academic and business circles. He is a well-known Canadian
expert in Asia-Pacific economics, policy and relations between
Canada and Asia. He is a senior reseatfcher in several think-tanks and
research institutions. He has served as President and CEGO of Asia
Paciftc Foundation of Canada, President of Vancouver 有 eadquarters
Promotion Bureau (HGQ Vancouver), as well as served on many
boards for non-profit organizations. He is Chair of the board for
the Vancouver Academy of Music. Yuen-Pau also served as the
representative on the Paciftc 了 上 conomic Cooperation Council (PECC)
for ten consecutive years. In 2012, he was recognized with the (COueens
Diamond Jubilee Award for his contributions to Canada-Asia relations.

taken.， After years of research in public policy serving in the 9enate
and putting his ideas and knowledge to action is a natural extension of
Yuen Paus life work.
The transition to public life was not without challenges. In addition
to the intrinsic difculty of putting ideas into practice, personal
attacks had to be dealt with. VVhen Senator VWVoos appointment was
announced, there was objection from a member of parliament, who
claimed that his appointment demonstrated foreign infHuence, and that
9enator Woo would act in favour of the Peoples Republic of China.
Later this member of parliament apologized to 9enator VVoo under
public pressure and charges of racism.
9enator VVoo was also accused of helping the Peoples Republic of
China when he opposed a motion on 9outh China 9ea. 9enator VVoo
responded with clarity: Anyone who has read my speech on the 9outh
China 9ea issue will understand that the position [ have adopted is
entirely based on the guiding principle for promoting Canadas interests
in Asia and the world.”
In recent years, accusations of being pro-China have become
convenient rationales for some Canadian politicians to attack Chinese-
Canadians who hold different opinions. Ihis not only has an impact

on Chinese Canadian politicians, but it also affects the entire Chinese-
Canadian commnunity 9enator VVoo believes that Chinas infuence in
todays world is growing. In a globaljly interconnected world, Canada
cannot always be separated or isolated from China. 时 e feels that
naturally there are some issues on which a Chinese position could
be very much aligned with Canadian interests，9enatof VVoo SaysS，
“Chinese Canadians speaking out on issues related to China and
expressing Support for Canadas deeper engagement with the Peoples
Republic should not be stereotyped as pro-China. Opinions that
are based on deep knowledge of and experience in China should be
welcomed as contributions to a national debate rather than cast aslide
because of lazy assumptions about the Chinese Canadian community.
Canadas outlook will be shaped in part by the countrys response to
the growing infuence of China in the world. In this respecb Chinese
Canadians who can contribute to thinking about the longer-term
interests of Canada vis-a-vis China have a vital role to play .
Atthe same titme, 9enator VVoo Stresses that Chinese Canadians should
have a clear understanding of their identity and their evolving roles
in society He says，Chinese Canadians should be confhdent in their
cultural heritage, which is not dependent on nationality or country of
origin. [hey should not have to rely on external sources to validate their
identity as Canadians of Chinese background. Likewise, they should
not have to downplay their heritage in order to join the Canadian

妇 教 完 一 次 ， 大 家 下 谍 时 已 记 不 了 舞步 ， 我 在 电梯 口 就 再 教 一
次 。 很 多 和 人 跟 不 上 拍子， 我 残 将 目 己 的 理解 向 同学 解释 。, 结
采 余 瑞 心 学 了 七 个 月 融 补 老 郎 派出 去 表演 。
94 年 同学 或 局 她 云 若 康 中 心 鲁 义务 老师 开 班 教 排 舞 ， 学费
每 读 七 元 ， 全 部 捐 给 目 康 ' 半年 合 筹 了 四 干 七 昕 元 ， 以 后 她 就
禹 不 同 的 非 件 利 机 构 开 班 教 跳舞 ， 全盛 时 期 一 星期 教 十 五 班 。
而 移 了 令 学 生 更易 萤 握 舞 步 ， 她 更 自行 篇 舞 ' 将 基本 舞步 虱 量
编 在 一 首 歌 中 ， 访 初级 班 早早 掌握 。 上 课 之 余 ' 她 每 天 笛 人 花 三
小 时 搜集 资料 。 “我 单单 想 : 怎样 能 令 不 同 程度 的 学 生 都 漠 足
地 部 开 舞 室 ? 有 学 生 自卑 地 对 我 说 : “ 老 朗 我 很 曼 学 不 好 4。 ，
我 心 想 教 不 全 你 其 实 是 老 朗 芭 ， 老 妇 要 负责 任 。J 禹 了 邻 学 生
更 易 明 白 ， 余 瑞 心 出 又 法 宝 ， 包 括 堪 右 脚 穿 不 同 里 色 的 鞋子 云
上 译 ， 让 学 生 更 吻 记 屋 舞 步 。 余 瑞 心 篇 撰 的 排 舞 ， 广 受 宪 区 散
迎 ，2004 年 更 在 之 加 哥 排 舞 大 赛 中 获取 季军 ， 成 总 安 省 首位 多

余 瑞 心 教 舞 没有 想 过 赚 氏 ， 也 没有 考虑 开 自 己 的 舞 宇 ，
我 不 想 开 舞 室 赚 钱 ， 我 要 自由 ， 可 以 随时 不 难 ， 不 用 短 着 目
己 。,J 不 求 利益 ， 教 跳舞 束 成 了 很 单纯 的 事 ， 余 瑞 心 也 秋 意 利
用 和 这 个 机 会 为 社 苗 筹 款 ， 二 十 年 问 她 曾 为 项 康 基 金 售 、 关 上
\` 盏 当 会 、 声 群 社 服 务 中心 ， 华 详 处 、 福 巧 教育 基金 合 、
加 拿 大 糖尿 病 声 会 、 安 省 心脏 及 中 风 基 金 、 康 福 心 理 健康 基金
\`YMCA、 奥 比 斯 眼科 飞机 终 院 等 组 织 鞘 务 教授 排 舞 班 、
闵 演 或 举行 慈善 派对 ， 大 家 伦 十 元 八 块 参加 派 尘 跳 上 三 、 四 小
时 ， 学 生出 钱 ' 老师 和 闵 工 出 力 ， 机构 受 益 。 余 到 心 称 只 要 是
正章 的 非 件 利 机 构 她 都 帮 意 旬 忙 。 余 到 心 最 尖 足 的 两 次 艾 款 活
动 分 别 是 2007 年 入 孟 和 营 售 筹 秩 的 加 拿 大 马拉松 排 舞 活动 ， 共
有 八 上 人 出 厅 ， 跳 足 八 小 上 时， 敌 了 一 万 六 干 元 。 且 年 再 接 再
属 ， 人 数 增加 至 九 百 人 “， 九 小 时 敌 了 一 量 八 千 元 ， 同 场 婚 时 篇
四 川 地 晨 , 筹 称 ' 二 十 分 钾 内 再 名 红 十 字 售 车 了 一 万 元 。 由
2001 年 开始 ， 她 分 别 被 不 同 机 构 提 名 “， 六 次 获 安 省 政府 贫 发 年
上 度 义 工 奖 。
此 外 ， 她 更 推出 了 排 舞 DVD 示范 专辑 ， 贺 和 红 十 字 会 、 华 说
处 及 备 党 会 义 帝 筹 款 ， 说 到 这 套 和 给 学 生 “ 温 书 , 的 DVD 余 瑞 心
非 音 自豪 ， 因为 约克 区 的 图 书馆 也 买 了 北 套 收藏 。 她 估计 二 十
年 来 移 社 区 筹 得 的 天 项 超过 三 十 八 万 元 。

余 瑞 心 教学 二 十 年 ， 桃李 漠 站 ， 在 她 门下 受训 的 老师 也
多 不 腾 数 ， 能 绚 培 套 接 班 人 她 称 满足 感 很 大 ， 而 最 重要 是 影响
了 老师 的 教学 态度 : “我 让 她 从 明白 做 人 不 需要 那 床 计 较 ， 半
斤 不 一 定 要 拿 回 八 夯 ， 有 时 得 到 四 了 西 的 回报 也 没有 所谓
就 是 学 生 ， 要 从 她 们 的 立场 上 考虑 。, 余 瑞 心 认为 做 人 不 要 太

余 瑞 心 草 年 考虑 回流 ， 最 人 后 随遇而安 留 在 加 拿 大 ， 今 天 器
看 她 绝 不 和 后悔 : “我 在 加 拿 大 很 满足 ， 这 结 生活 搓 素 好 ， 遇 到

People might say that VVinnie s life story is a jegend. 9he started as
a business owner in 了 ong 上 ong.， Jlhen she immigrated to Canada
thinking she would return to Hong 上 ong after she obtained her
citizenship. She never imagined that in the end she would stay in
Toronto to be a volunteer. In 再 ong 上 ong she had never learned
to dance， But in Toronto, she became the most well-known line
dance teacher in the Chinese community. My life can be divided
into two chapters. Running a business in 了 ong 上 Kong is the first
part. [eaching line dancing in [Toronto is the second，VVinnie said.
The two chapters seem to be totally different.， But with VVinnie s
conviction and commitment, the results are equally outstanding.
The farst chapter of VVinnie's life is a typical Hong 上 Kong story、

Her parents fed with nothing from Mainland China. VVinnie
experienced poverty frsthand: VVe would get leftover food supplies
from restaurants, bringing them home to cook and eat.” Even today，
she has vivid memories of hardship from childhoodqd. Fortunately，
her father started a catering business and the family situation
improved. During holidays and festivals, their family would give
out food to those less fortunate in their community，VVhen VVinnie
was handing out food, her father said to her，Now you are the one
who is giving .But iiyou dont study hard and apply yourself in
life, you will become the person who receives.” Ihe young Winnie
thought to herself，Vhether one gives or Teceives depends on
fate, and whatever hand fate deals must be accepted. TIhose who
receive' dontwish to be in that Situation either.”
In fact, Vinnie approached a di 全 cult situation of her own with the
same philosophy. VVhen she was in the twelfth grade, her father
felt she should not pursue higher education in order to help the
familys finances and let her two sisters with better grades continue
their schooling. 了 Even though she was disappointed, she believed
in her own future: 9tudy or not, it doesn t matter, [ have to accept
whatever happens and IT can make the best of things. VVorking is
also an oppPortunity.，
To be close to her family, Winnie went to work in a nearby
chandelier shop, where she met her future husband, a co-worker.
In the 1970s, Hong 上 ong's economy took of 企 . VVinnie recognized
the opportunities in luxury goods and worked diligently to learn
the ropes of the business. After a few years, she and her husband
started their own chandelier business. As a result of their hard work
and professionalism, their business grew bigger and bigger. By the
1990s, they had set up their own factory with more than thirty
employees. Their products were exported to Mainland China and
throughout Asia. But, ultimately, for the sake of their children s

education and future, their family chose to leave 日 ong 上 ong and
move to Canada in 1991.
Accustomed to a busy schedule of business trips and meetings al
over Asia, Winnie found life as ahousewife in Canada tedious
and dull. “After just one year, [ wanted to leave，VVinnie said. In
her free time, she went to a nearby Primary school to work as a
volunteer in the library. To stay out of the house, she participated
in [ai Chi classes. In 1993, she enrolled in a dance class and
immediately knew it was her calling. 9he was a very talented
student from the start: “JIhe instructor taught us a new dance
routine. After the class was over, none of the students could
remember how it went. T was the only one who knew it 9o
would go out into the hallway by the elevator and teach them
again.， After seven months as a student, the dance instructor chose
VVinnie to perform.
In 1994, her classmates encouraged her to start line dance classes at
the Yee 甩 ong Centre for Geriatric Care. 上 ach student paid a fee
of seven dollars per class, donated to Yee 甩 ong. After six months，
she had raised $4,700. From that point onward, she started teaching
line dance classes for various non-proft organizations. 90on she had
afull schedule, dancing and teaching ftfteen classes per week. In
order to make it easier for students to master the dance routines she
designed the choreography herself，]Many of the basic dance steps
were compiled into a single song, so that the fundamentals could be
mastered quickly. In addition to class, she spent another three hours
every day researching material that would help her become a better
teacher. ] often thought: 也 ow could LI teach so many students of
unequal dancing ability in a single class, so that theyre all satisfted
with my teaching?” 9ome students lack self-confdence and say:

has to bear responsibility.
Jhe line dances that Winnie choreographed are immensely popular
in the line dance community. In 2004, she won third place in the
Chicago Line Dance Choreography Competition and became the
frst award-winning Chinese line dance choreographer in Ontario.
Jn the course of her teaching life, Winnie has done a great deal to
help her students， 上 For example, she had the novel idea of using
shoes of diffterent colours on the left and right feet making it easier
for students to remember the dance steps. Dancing and exercise
have benefitted Winnie s health, making her digestion issues and
hay fever go away, as well as increasing her ability to focus. VVhat is
interesting is that this kind of relaxing exercise relieves the pressure
for many newcomers to Canada.“ [here are a lot of women whose
husbands are away, who are unhappy, depressed and don t know
how to resolve their problems. But dancing together can relax us.
Negative thoughts are put aside. A student told me that if she
didnt dance, she would commit suicide. VVinnie always tells her
students to clear their minds, put aside bad thoughts, and focus on
dancing together.
VVinnie never thought about making money from teaching dance.
Nor did she think about opening her own dance studio. 工 dont
want to make money through dancing. 工 want to be free. 工 dont
want to be tied down. VVithout the desire for proftt teaching
line dance became a simple matter, and she was very happy to use
this opportunity to raise money for the community. jln the past
twenty years, VVinnie has taught dance classes or organized charity
performances and events on behalf of the Yee Hong Centre for
Geriatric Care, Carefirst Mon Sheong Foundation,， 9. 匡 .A.9.
Centre, CICS, Fuhui Education Foundation, Canadian Diabetes
Association, Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation, Hong Fook
Mental Health Foundation, YMCA, Orbis Flying 上 ye Hospital

and other nonproft organizations. Typically, participants spend
$8 to $10 to dance for 3 or 4 hours in a party，Jhe students enjoy
paying for instruction and helping out a charity， JIhe teachers and
volunteers contribute their time and expertise, and the organization
beneftts. VVinnie always says that she is willing to help as long as
there is a legitimate need.
VVinnie's proudest fundraising activities include the dance marathon
for Mon 9heong Foundation in 2007. A total of eight hundred
people attended the event, dancing for eight hours, raising $16,000.
In the following year, nine hundred people attended, raising
$18,000. An impromptu fundraising activity during this event for
the victims of Sichuan Earthquake raised $10,000 for Red Cross in
just twenty minutes. 9ince 2001, VVinnie has been nominated by
various institutions and awarded the Annual Volunteer Award Six
times by the Ontario government.
Additionally, VVinnie also launched a set of instructional dance
DVDs to raise funds for Red Cross, CIC9 and Mon Sheong
Foundation. Winnie explains that this set of DVDs will help her
Students review and Practice. 9he is proud of this achievement，
especially because the collection of DVJDs was Purchased by York
Region Library. 9he estimates that over the last twenty years she
has raised more than 380,000 dollars for the community.
Jn twenty years, VVinnie has garnered a very large following of loyal
students. Among these, she has also trained countless excejllent
teachers， Training successotrs to continue her legacy gives her great
satisfaction. For Winnie, the most important thing is to infuence
the teachers attitude: “] want them to understand that they should
not be petty in their thinking. lf they put in a pound, they shouldnt
expect to always get a pound back. Even itthey get half a pound in
return, its not So bad, and it doesn tt matter. Students are students，
look at it from their perspective.”VVhether one wins or loses, do

not be overly concerned: “Today one may lose. But what do you
know about the future? 开 you win today, you may lose tomorrow
just as easily. 入 you lose today, you may win tomorrow. Ifyou are
petty with others, they winot help you when you need them.，
During a dance class, when her students are excited and into it, she
is happy to spend more time in the studio with them, even if she
has to pay extra for the studio space.“Tlike to dance anyway, So we
can all keep dancing together! 9he wins the hearts of others with
her own caring attitude，VVhenever VVinnie raises money, everyone
responds with a helping hand. 下 ven students who have moved to
Hong 上 ong often send back donation cheques，
In the past VVinnie had thought about returning to Hong 上 ong，
but she ultimately stayed in Canada.， Today, she does not regret
it at al. Tam content in Canada. Jhe quality of life here is good，
and the people ] meet are all very nice.”To newcomers who
face di 全 culties in their daily lives, her advice is: “Adapt to your
cifcumstances. 工 ake whatever that comes in stride.”JIfa door
closes, another will open. Just like VVinnie, who gave up her
business career, only to fnd a new and better one in the art of line
dancing.
VVinnie believes in positive energy: “[ always think on the bright
side of things， Just like the Chinese Canadian Legend Award .
T always thought lwould get it! .Finally, VVinnie has been
recognized for her contribution, and she intends to celebrate in the
most ftting way -- a big dance party with her students.

来 月 医生 、 和 其 黎 沉 维 广 士 久 余 珊 心 女士 ， 在 探访 过 程 中 芮 女士
和 余 女 十 都 不 约 而 同 地 跟 我 说 “做 人 不 要 斤斤计较 」 ， 黄 黎 沉
维 女 十 多 年 来 在 社区 捐 出 正 款 文 持 各 问 葵 善 机 构 ， 但 访问 时 ，
售 不 乐 伸手 关 反 不 用 的 和 类， 使 用 的 和 经线 如果 太 大 ， 也 要 将 它 裁
半 “， 这 都 贯彻 她 的 理财 原则 一 一 “应 怪 得 怪 ， 应 使 得 使 ， 但
